---------------------------------------------------------------------
DISCLAIMER: PLEASE BE RESPONSIBLE. USE THIS UTILITY AT YOUR OWN RISK!
Release Notes
-------------
Version 2.0 includes the following enhancements and fixes:
* OS detection mechanism - enabling DXE to be run on ALL? localized
versions of Windows 2000 or later; not just "English".
* DX uninstall/rollback support for Windows Server 2003.
* Automated DX rollback for Windows 98/ME
Version Check
-------------
DXE uses "FIND.EXE" to detect your operating system. This file should
already be installed during Windows setup. If not, you must copy this
file to either one of the following system folders below -
* IF you're running Windows 9X or ME, copy FIND.EXE to:
[DRIVE:]\%WinBootDir%\Command
* IF you're running Windows 2K-XP-2K3, copy FIND.EXE to:
[DRIVE:]\%SystemRoot%\System32
Also make sure both the TEMP and TMP variables are set to the "root"
drive. In most cases, you won't have to make changes here.
DXE -Vs- WFP
------------
Windows File Protection will be disabled on Windows 2000/XP/2003 by
default. If you're uncomfortable with this, please DO NOT continue!!
FYI: The "DirectX Rollback Wizard" (see below) will also restore the
original WFP dynamic link library. If you choose not to run Rollback
but want to restore WFP functionality, open the Add/Remove Programs
Control Panel applet, select DirectX Eradicator click Change/Remove.
Cdrom Rollback
--------------
Cdrom rollback is available as a "post-uninstall" feature on systems
running Windows 98 or better... The 'FULL' retail version of DirectX
will be restored from the Windows CD; no interaction is necessary as
this process is fully automated. To initiate this procedure, double-
click the "DirectX Rollback Wizard" shortcut on the Desktop.
Windows Server 2003: All hardware acceleration features will be set
to "Enabled" by default. You can verify this by running DXDIAG.EXE.
Compatibility
-------------
Windows 2000/XP/2K3 users must be logged on as an Administrator, or
a member of the Administrators' group to use DirectX Eradicator. In
addition, "Cryptographic Services" MUST BE ENABLED; to view a list
of running services, type: NET START at the command console.
MS04-016 info
-------------
DXE will remove all files and registry information pertaining to the
DirectPlay security vulnerability patch - KB839643. It is recommended
you reinstall this patch once you have successfully restored DirectX
from your Windows CD. For patch details/downloads, visit:
www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms04-016.mspx
