Why to formate the HDD before installation? The installing-Program will lead you through the installation-process and will do that either automaticly or via manually installation input over the "anything else" menu. So for example for Ubuntu or Ubuntu based Linux.
So give us more details about hardware (model Notebook or motherboard precisely) and the chosen Linux distribution.
